EMS for Manafwa

A Project to give people access to emergency healthcare through ambulances.

Manafwa’s beauty, and healthcare challenges

Nestled in eastern Uganda’s Mt. Elgon mountain range is Manafwa, a district rich in natural beauty, but challenged by rugged terrain and limited access to healthcare. Here, the people already face tremendous challenges, as communities are dispersed across remote villages lacking transportation infrastructure.

Without emergency medical transportation, Manafwa’s residents must either walk several kilometers, or use small and unsafe motorcycles during medical emergencies. This becomes nearly impossible when patients are unconscious, in critical condition or when the roads are impassable by motorcycle due to heavy rains.

The lack of proper transportation methods means preventable deaths, heightened suffering, and a sense of vulnerability during crises. Patients are often stranded and medical facilities are unable to help the people who need them most.

72,6%

Of Manafwa’s population does not have access to a healthcenter within 5 kilometers, leaving them incredibly vulnerable in emergency situations.

The lack of timely access to health care facilities in the moment of giving birth, leaves women extremely vulnerable in a situation where they should be safe and protected.

3 Goals to make a change

01

Increase availability & value of pre-hospital and health care.

Quality care and connection with health centres during emergencies will reduce mortality rates, especially during childbirth, accidents and natural disasters.

02

Increase connectivity and support between individual health centres.

Combined efforts through increased communication and collaboration between remote clinics will allow for development in the overall quality of health care.

03

Increase community resilience and first aid capabilities.

Equipping communities with basic medicine- and first aid skills enable them to reduce medical emergencies caused by untreated illnesses and injuries.

Evaluating for Success

Charity Health workers

Adapt and Refine

The evaluation process enables us to adapt and refine our approach over time, ensuring that the ambulance service remains responsive to evolving challenges and priorities.

Monitor for Success

The success and progress of the ambulance service will be evaluated through ongoing monitoring and evaluation processes.

How we evaluate

01

Response Times and Patient Outcomes:

Monitor response times from the moment of receiving a call to the arrival at the destination to ensure timely assistance.

02

Regular Surveys and Feedback Sessions:

Administer surveys to community members and healthcare providers to gather feedback on the quality and effectiveness of ambulance services.

03

External Evaluators and Stakeholders:

Engage public health experts, researchers, and community representatives, to provide independent assessments of the ambulance service.

04

Analyzing Data on Emergencies Served:

Analyze data on the number and types of emergencies responded to by the ambulance service to identify patterns, trends, and areas of high demand.

Assess the appropriateness of resource allocation and operational decisions based on the analysis of emergency data.

05

Reporting Data for future growth:

Provide comprehensive reports on the performance and impact of the ambulance service to stakeholders and funders.

Use evaluation data to inform the development of additional proposals for funding, expansion, or replication of successful initiatives.
